Prepare to Leave Your Comfort Zone
Many people hesitate to try vanlife because they are afraid of heading into the unknown. Over the transition time, you should feel at ease in your van. Our Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has been our house on wheels for the last three years. In it, regardless of where we travel, we feel safe and protected. Customizing it is simple so we may be at ease in our own environment.
Verify that there is adequate room to get from the van’s front to the rear living area. From your morning coffee to your nighttime ritual, you should be able to do all you require in your day without having to leave your van.
Remember why you chose vanlife. What was missing in your life? Why did you want something different?
Balance Your Life While on the Road
We’ve had ups and downs, just like a traditional family. It’s not always easy to balance working remotely, doing chores, raising a baby, and enjoying the view.
Here’s our top tip: find the right work-life balance so you can enjoy your time in the van. We think these mindsets help:
- You never know what tomorrow will bring.
- Stay curious. Vanlife is all about discovering and exploring.
- Meeting new people on the road is one of the best parts.
- Waiting is a virtue—the reward is worth it.
- Vanlife isn’t all fun and games. You still have to get things done.
- Turn problems into chances to learn.
- Have fun, and let the world lead the way.
- Be open to what makes you happy—and stick with it.
Slow Down and Look at How You Spend Your Day
Vanlife has taught us that time is something you can’t buy. It’s for people who want to enjoy life and appreciate every moment.
You can make your own schedule to fit your needs. We try to drive when others are at work, so the roads are less crowded. If we run into traffic, we take the next exit instead of getting stuck.
The better you get at managing your time, the more you’ll be able to enjoy each day.
Sometimes You Just Have to Do It
You won’t know if vanlife is right for you until you try it. Here are some tips we always give first-time vanlifers:
- Go further—but safely! Some of the best views are off the main roads.
- Find your own pace. You don’t have to work full-time right away.
- Never skip maintenance for your van.
- Give yourself more time than your GPS says to get there.
- Only pack the things you really need.
- Don’t forget how important personal space is.
